Criminal Court Cases in Casey County
Casey County uses Kentucky's unified court system. Casey Circuit Court, part of the 29th Judicial Circuit, hears felony prosecutions, trials, pleas, sentences, and later motions. Casey District Court, in the 29th Judicial District, hears misdemeanors, violations, traffic cases, initial appearances, warrants, and the early stages of felony matters. Liberty has no separate municipal court portal for these cases.
The Office of Circuit Court Clerk is the legal custodian for both trial courts. That office title can cause needless confusion. It does not mean the clerk keeps only Circuit Court files. A District misdemeanor and a Circuit felony both run through the clerk at the Casey County Judicial Center. The Casey County Clerk on Campbellsville Street handles deeds, elections, and vehicle work, not criminal dockets.

Casey County Case Record Searches
There is no anonymous local docket portal documented for Casey County. CourtNet holds trial-court case information, but full eCourts access is chiefly for authorized users and attorneys. AOC FastCheck is the public statewide court-activity report channel. It can locate Kentucky District and Circuit activity, yet the report itself says it is not an official court record. Use it as a lead, then confirm the docket and filed papers with the Casey clerk.
- Choose the correct clerk line. Use District for misdemeanors, traffic, violations, and F-type preliminary felony matters; use Circuit for indicted CR cases.
- Give the case number when known. Otherwise provide the name and an approximate filing year, then ask the clerk to distinguish similar names.
- Ask for the docket sheet first. It lists the filed events and helps identify the exact order, plea, indictment, judgment, or sentence needed.
- Read each charge through to its own disposition. Do not treat the first charge or an indictment as the final result.
- Request a plain or certified copy from the clerk. Ask about the current copy charge, delivery method, and archive status before paying.

Reading Casey County Criminal Case Numbers
Kentucky case numbers generally combine a two-digit filing year, a case-type code, and a sequence number. A pattern such as 26-F-00000 is only an example, not a real person's case. The letter often tells the reader where the matter sits. An F file usually marks the District Court preliminary stage of a felony. A CR file identifies a Circuit criminal prosecution. M and T indicate misdemeanor and traffic case types.
A felony event can therefore produce both an F number and a later CR number. That does not mean two convictions exist. The District file can contain the complaint, initial appearance, bond, and preliminary action. If a grand jury indicts, the Circuit file holds the prosecution that follows. Ask the clerk to connect the numbers when the name search finds just one stage.

What a Criminal Case File Contains
The docket sheet is the best first request because it is the chronological index to the Casey County case. It can point to a citation or complaint, indictment, arraignment, motions, hearings, plea or trial, judgment, sentence, probation event, warrant, capias, or revocation filing. A capias is a court order directing that a person be taken into custody, often after a missed appearance or failure to comply.

Some files also include exhibits, reports, recordings, or transcript references. Availability and copy charges depend on the clerk and the record. Ask for a certified judgment when an official copy is needed; a FastCheck summary cannot stand in for the court's signed document.
Archived Casey County Criminal Case Files
An older Casey County file may no longer sit at the public counter. Start with the Circuit Court Clerk anyway. Staff must identify whether the file is on site, retained elsewhere, archived, or destroyed under a record schedule. If it is off-site, request both the case number and the facility locator number. The State Records Center cannot search a court file by a name or Social Security number alone.
The clerk-first route saves a failed archive request. Once the locator data are known, the Kentucky Court of Justice directs eligible State Records Center inquiries to state.records@ky.gov or 502-564-3617. Ask the clerk which specific docket pages or orders can be retrieved and whether the file needs time to return to Liberty.

Criminal Case Stages in Casey County
A Casey County criminal case does not always begin and end in the same court. District Court handles the first appearance and preliminary felony work. The grand jury may return an indictment, which is a formal accusation rather than proof of guilt. The new Circuit Court CR file then tracks arraignment, pretrial motions, any plea or trial, the disposition, and sentencing.

District criminal court meets Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. The Circuit criminal motion docket is held on the second and fourth Mondays at 10 a.m. Those recurring times help explain docket entries, but they are not a promise that a particular case will be heard. Confirm a setting with the Casey clerk before relying on it.
Casey County Charges and Dispositions
The first charge is not always the last charge. Prosecutors may amend a count, a grand jury may decline to indict, or the court may dismiss or acquit. A plea can resolve some counts while others are dismissed. Read the original charge, amendment, and disposition as separate fields. A disposition is the recorded result; it should be checked for each count rather than inferred from the case caption.

Statistics describe filed or disposed court activity, not the outcome of a named Casey County case. Keep the year, unit, and case category attached to any number.

Who Prosecutes Casey County Cases
Kentucky does not call its felony prosecutor a district attorney. The Commonwealth's Attorney serves the 29th Judicial Circuit, which joins Casey and Adair counties, and prosecutes Circuit felony matters. The state's Casey County profile lists County Attorney Thomas Weddle at 606-787-7100; that office generally prosecutes District Court misdemeanors and violations. The prosecutor name in a file can therefore help confirm which court stage is being reviewed.
Kentucky provides indigent defense through a state system after the court finds a person eligible. It is not a separately branded Casey County public defender office. Victim-service and charge questions may go to the relevant prosecutor, but the clerk remains the custodian for filed motions, orders, dockets, and judgments. Access Rules for Case Records
Public access does not mean every field or every case is open. Juvenile matters and confidential case types are restricted. Protected identifiers, victim-sensitive facts, and sealed or expunged material may be removed or withheld. A public FastCheck report also excludes confidential juvenile, mental-health, and domestic-violence case types, plus expunged or purged cases. A blank result is not proof that no event occurred.
Court case access follows Kentucky Court of Justice clerk policy, not the same process used for an executive-branch open-records request. KRS 17.150 also distinguishes releasable criminal-justice reports from centralized criminal histories, which are not open for general inspection. Qualifying acquittal and dismissal relief is governed by KRS 431.076. Ask the clerk why an item is absent and whether a public redacted copy is available. If the case was appealed, the appellate docket uses C-Track Public Access while the Casey trial file stays with the local clerk.
Federal records sit outside the Casey County system. Casey County is in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and federal criminal dockets use PACER rather than the county clerk or AOC FastCheck.
The federal court source marks the jurisdictional split: a Casey County search cannot supply federal pleadings, and a federal search cannot replace the local Circuit or District file.
